Unlimited Race Rules

Start:

  • Each lap starts precisely on the hour, every hour.

  • Runners must be in the starting corral at the bell.

  • Warnings are given at 3, 2, and 1 minute(s) before each start.

  • All competitors must start at the bell (no late starts); missing the start means elimination.

During the Lap:

  • Each lap must be completed within one hour, including the final lap.

  • Runners may only leave the course to use the restroom.

  • No non-competitors (including eliminated runners) are allowed on the course.

  • No personal aid is allowed during a lap (common aid stations are permitted at the start/finish area only).

  • No artificial aids (e.g., trekking poles) or pacers are allowed.

  • Slower runners must allow faster runners to pass.

Between Laps:

  • Any remaining time after finishing a lap can be used for rest, food, or preparation for the next lap.

Elimination:

  • Failing to finish a lap within the hour, not starting at the bell, or voluntarily quitting results in elimination (marked as DNF—Did Not Finish).

Winner Determination:

  • The winner is the last person to complete a lap on their own; all others receive a DNF.

  • If no runner completes one more lap than the others, there is no winner.

Time Limited Race Rules (24, 12, and 6 hours)

General Format

  • The same rules as the standard backyard ultra apply regarding lap distance, start, aid, and elimination.

  • The event is capped at a set number of hours or laps (e.g., 12 hours, 24 hours, or a set number of loops).

Winner Determination in Time-Limited Events:

  • The runner who completes the most laps within the time limit is the winner.

  • If multiple runners complete the same number of laps, the fastest cumulative time for all completed laps may be used as a tiebreaker (if specified by the event).

  • If all runners complete the maximum number of laps, there may be multiple finishers.
